Top Ten Tuesday Part Six: Books I Cannot Stand

I was thinking about this topic a while back and I thought that I had to make a post about them. These books are in order from least hated to BURN IT WITH FIRE!!! I do not mean to offend anyone who likes the books below, they were just not my cup of tea.

10) Star Girl by Jerry Spinelli
I didn't necessarily hate this book, but some of the things in the book I just didn't agree with and I didn't connect with the characters and some of the things I just didn't get. It wasn't bad, don't get me wrong, but it's just wasn't my cup of tea at all.

9) City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare
I love the Mortal Instruments Series, but City of Ashes is my least favorite in the series. I don't quite know why, but I love the rest of the books, this is the only one that didn't quite gel for me.

8) Divergent by Veronica Roth
I know you all know of my feelings for this book. I liked the story, though I think it could have been expanded on and wasn't written to its fullest potential, but the writing is what made me hate it. The writing style was just so boring and straight to the fact with barely any description and when there was description, it was confusing to me. I did like Insurgent (I think it was because I was used to the writing style), but I didn't finish Allegiant (I think it's because I was spoiled).

7) When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead
I didn't connect with this book because I had never read A Wrinkle in Time which is a big part of this book and some things I just didn't get.

6) The first 4.5 books of the Princess Diaries Series by Meg Cabot
I don't know how I feel about this books. There like that fun person that you want to hang out with, but you don't want anyone to see you with and you know it's bad...

5) Touch by Francine Prose
I just didn't connect with the story. It was about sexual assault and I just thought it was kind of unrealistic, but could have been a really impactful story if it were done right. I also didn't like a lot of the characters.

4) Beautiful Darkness by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
Don't get me wrong, I love the Beautiful Creatures series. It's great... with one exception. Beautiful Darkness is close to be one of the worst books I've ever read. Lena was so aggravating and her actions were unrealistic and I think that is the only reason I really hated the book, because I had loved Lena in the previous book.

3) Matched by Allie Condie
I hate Match. I'm sorry, but I'm not going to sugar coat it. I had such a hard time getting through it and thought that the premise wasn't fully developed in Allie Condie's mind, as well as the characters. Allie Condie had a good, basic idea for a typical dystopian. The idea could have become something great, but instead, it just sort of became a disaster. The only character I love was Ky. He was great. I wanted to hurt both Xavier and Cassia (I had to look up her name) because they frustrated me so much. Also, what kind of name is Cassia, it's just weird to me. Anyway, I did read Crossed and liked it so much more than Matched, I just thought it was more interesting and I liked the characters in it more. I tried to read Reached, but I stopped after five pages. The author was trying to get Cassia to seem like a bad-a, but she's not. She just isn't, Ky is the only one who really is in this book.

2) A Separate Peace by John Knowles
This book is a classic, for good reasons. I get the underlying messages and the writing is good, but I just didn't like it. I got lost in the description and I didn't like the characters, but I was stuck by the ending, it made me legitimately sad. I think people who like his kind of writing, with a lot of description with a lot of underlying messages that you have to discover, would love this book. I just didn't like. I had to read it for school and I didn't finish it. The first four chapters were good and the last two, but between was just boring for me.

1) Belle's Song by K.M. Grant
THIS BOOK! I can't even describe my hatred for this book. The last two chapters were really good, but everything before that, I can't even think about without going on a rampage. I didn't even get through the first hundred pages, I think, before I just skipped to the end. To make things for this book even worse, I had to write a book report on a book I didn't finish. It was just boring and I felt like everything just didn't have a point, especially one of what Grant had portrayed as a love interest being gay.
That fact didn't add to the story at all, it just made somethings going on in the plot really inconvenient. I have nothing against his character, in fact I really enjoyed his character's personality, it's that he just made things for the main character more difficult than was necessary for the author to make them. I wish the book, being set in medieval times, had focused more on the main character and the aforementioned character's relationship and various things that could have happened because of the characters' backgrounds and personalities, which were not considered normal for the times. Being gay wasn't a thing back then. It was, but it wasn't, if that makes sense, and the fact that when he told the main character, she was just like, "Okay!" That's not historically accurate and that bothers me. If the book was set in medieval times, she should have freaked out because that's what really happened back then. If I know ahead of time that a book were historically inaccurate, hopefully because of paranormal or fantasy elements, then that would be okay, but it's not if it is categorized under historical fiction.
The real plot was really uninteresting. I now realize I want someone to write a book like what I had just described because I think it will be really interesting. I hope all of that made sense. To sum all that up, I didn't like the book because of the author and I want it rewritten so it's interesting, the characters are given proper justice, and is historically accurate. *Insert smiley face here*
Don't get me wrong, I did like some of the things in the book. I thought K.M. Grant captured Medieval England well. I could picture the country side so beautifully from the way it was written. Maybe if I had finished it, I might have a different opinion, but I didn't. I think I was so excited for this book that I picked out the things I didn't like easily. I really wish I like this book better than I did. I might give it another try someday. I also want to read How the Hangman Lost His Heart because it sounds really interesting and I think I might like that one better.

There it is! I feel really mean, right now, but you can't call something bad good, because I feel like that would be down grading legitimately good pieces of literature. Please remember that everything above was only my opinion and that is different from everyone else. Believe me, I did enjoy some aspects of these books, but for the purpose of this particular post, I wasn't able to talk about those. Some of the books were just because I didn't connect with the characters personally, but that shouldn't keep you from reading any of the books above. I did enjoy reading the books above, but they just haven't stuck out as favorites for me. Anything I say about the books in this post should not keep any of you from reading them. If you agree, or even if you disagree, comment below and tell me why.
