In a land without magic, where the king rules with an iron hand, an assassin is summoned to the castle. She comes not to kill the king, but to win her freedom. If she defeats twenty-three killers, thieves, and warriors in a competition, she is released from prison to serve as the king's champion. Her name is Celaena Sardothien.

The Crown Prince will provoke her. The Captain of the Guard will protect her. But something evil dwells in the castle of glass--and it's there to kill. When her competitors start dying one by one, Celaena's fight for freedom becomes a fight for survival, and a desperate quest to root out the evil before it destroys her world. (Thank you Goodreads for the synopsis).

I know I'm really late on this band wagon, but at least I hopped on at all. I have to say that I enjoyed the book. I wasn't necessarily blown away. It was okay. I think I was expecting too much from it because of all of the hype around this series, but I have heard that the series gets better as it goes on, so I will be reading Crown of Midnight very soon. I also think the covers are so cool. What's better than an assassin really?

I did really like the mystery element of it and the characters were very entertaining. There were some characters I wish we could see more of such as Phillipa and Nox. I also wish we got to see Celaena train more or really just be outside of her rooms which is where she was the basically the whole time. I also wish we got to see her fight more. She's a notorious assassin and we barely got to see why and when we got to see why the plan didn't exactly work! Also, the competition aspect of it reminded me a bit of the Dauntless competition in Divergent by Veronica Roth. I don't know if it's just me, though. Overall, there are some good and bad things about this book and I did enjoy it and would recommend it saying to not the hype get to your head.

Star Rating: 3.75
